How we teach

You learn by sailing, not by watching.

Our programmes are built around real work on board. We connect the theory to what is happening at sea right then, and the aim is not only to understand what needs doing — it is to be able to do it yourself, safely.

01

The boat and safety

Before the first manoeuvre we go through the boat, the equipment, the basic safety rules and the roles on board.

02

Helm and sails

The more time you spend on the helm and handling sails, the faster you develop a feel for the boat and the wind.

03

Manoeuvres and decisions

We practise until the steps make sense and feel natural — not just until you get them right once.

04

Independence and crew work

The goal is that you know what you are doing, why you are doing it, and how to react when conditions at sea are less than ideal.

Accommodation

The course does not end when we return to the marina.

Our courses are meant to be an experience, not just a few hours at sea. That is why accommodation is included in the beginner and advanced courses — two nights aboard the Hanse 430, or two nights in an apartment.

Boats

Different boats for different levels.

The beginner and advanced courses do not have the same goal, so they are not run on the same type of boat. For beginners we use a spacious cruising yacht, while the advanced programme is built around a racing sailboat and more demanding sail handling.

Hanse 430 for the Beginner Sailing Course

Beginner course

Hanse 430

A spacious yacht on which participants learn boat handling, sail work and life on board. Two nights aboard are included in the beginner programme.

Racing sailboat with her crew under way

Advanced course

Racing sailboat

A boat built for livelier sailing and real crew work. We use the mainsail and headsails, plus the spinnaker, drifter and gennaker.

The team

The people you will actually sail with.

The courses are run by Ivan and Boris Radolović — sailors with real experience on the water. The focus is not on lectures ashore, but on every participant taking an active part in handling the boat and working as crew, in groups of no more than 5.

Ivan Radolović, instructor and skipper, on board

Ivan Radolović

Instructor · skipper

Ivan Radolović grew up around sailing and developed his sailing knowledge alongside Boris Radolović. He is an experienced skipper with hands-on experience of handling sailboats and working at sea. At Pula Sailing School he runs the beginner programme and works with Boris on the advanced course.

Boris Radolović on a racing sailboat

Boris Radolović

Instructor · racing

Boris Radolović is one of the most experienced racing sailors in Pula, with more than 50 years at sea. For decades he has raced across the Adriatic and the Mediterranean, including demanding offshore and double-handed events. His Canarino Furioso became a well-known name in Croatian yacht racing. At Pula Sailing School he passes on that experience to participants of the advanced programme.

For the beginner course you need no previous experience at all. The advanced course is intended only for people who already have sailing experience. Previous sailing experience is also required to join a regatta.

For real racing experience, see the open regattas. If you are still unsure, tell us how much you have sailed so far and we will help you choose.
